This yarn is from sheep raised in New Jersey before a local farm closed its doors. It is natural colors, 50% merino and 50% Shetland. The yarn was processed at Green Mountain Spinnery in Vermont, a small business that supports the North American yarn trade.
The texture off the cone is really interesting with the softness of the merino combined with the crunchiness of the Shetland – I would call it a little bit crispy/rustic. It softens quite a bit when washed however – it will never feel like 100% merino but it didn’t feel scratchy to me after blocking.
Very little VM, still some lanolin.
I got 8 WPI as shown in the photo so I am calling this a bulky (CYCA 5).
The goal at the mill was 300 yards per cone but there is some variation so I would say assume you are getting 270 yards and if there is more you have a happy surprise. The cone in the photo weighed a little under 12 ounces including the cardboard tube in the center, again there is a lot of variation.
In the swatch photos, the unblocked swatches are on top and the washed swatches below. The yarn has a fair amount of bloom.
For the knit swatch I used a 10 ½ needle and got 12 sts x 16 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch after washing
For the crochet swatch on an L/8.00mm hook I got 10 ½ sts x 12 rows = 4” in single crochet after washing.
This is the very end of this run – the two flocks it came from have been disbursed – so grab some now while it lasts and make sure to grab enough for the project you have in mind!
Price is per cone.
